In the wake of another mass shooting in the U.S., this time at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland Florida, the Madison Democratic Town Committee voted in support of the following resolution at their regular meeting held on Monday, March 12, 2018:

“It is resolved that the Madison Democratic Town Committee stands united with the people of Parkland, Florida in their grief, sorrow and outrage over the senseless massacre of innocent lives in the heart of their community. We implore our local, state and national elected officials to support immediate action to prevent future mass shootings. These actions must include legislation for common sense gun control laws as well as adequate funding for mental health services and school security initiatives. Strategies to curb the impact of gun violence in our schools and communities must include the prohibition of the sale of assault style guns that can result in mass casualties. With over 200 school shootings nationwide since the Sandy Hook tragedy in 2012, gun lobbyists have successfully prioritized profits while politicizing responsible gun legislation as an assault on the second amendment, rather than supporting responsible gun ownership. We live in a time where the rights of gun owners supersede the rights of innocent victims – their right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. To that end, the MDTC will not endorse and/or support any candidate who receives, under good conscience, donations from the NRA or any of its derivative organizations for future election campaigns.”
