Peggy Lyons announced her candidacy for the office of First Selectman in Madison at the regular meeting of the Madison Democratic Town Committee on May 13, 2019. “Madison is at a unique crossroads in its history,” Lyons said. “While we live in a spectacular place surrounded by natural beauty and superb schools, we can no longer govern our town with the ways of the past – through a policy of procrastination and stagnation. We are facing significant challenges, anywhere from our aging buildings to our eroding beaches to our shifting demographics. We need a long term vision that meets these challenges head-on, reflects the community values of today, and includes a roadmap on how to get there tomorrow – a plan that is affordable, sustainable, and continues to offer a strong value proposition to the citizens of Madison. I will provide the leadership we need to take us forward while also restoring a tone of collegiality and collaboration to town government so we can get things done.”

Peggy moved to Madison in 2007 from New York City after marrying Madison native David Lyons. Together they are raising their two young children, Rose and Patrick, who both attend the Madison Public Schools. In addition to being an active school mom, Peggy currently serves on Madison’s Board of Police Commissioners, and previously sat on the town’s Board of Finance and Economic Development Commission.

“After twelve years of living, growing and volunteering as a member of this community, I have learned to appreciate Madison’s unique New England charm and the warmth of its people – David and I feel lucky to be raising our family here. Now I hope I can gain our community’s trust and support to protect what we have while striving to make it better as your First Selectman.”

Peggy’s business background gives her the expertise that Madison needs in a First Selectman. Along with an undergraduate degree from Cornell and an MBA from the Wharton School of Business, she spent over seventeen years advising some of the world’s largest corporations with a focus on corporate finance, mergers & acquisitions, and strategic planning. This includes positions as a Managing Director at Deloitte, a Manager at GE, and over eleven years on Wall Street at two major investment banks.

According to Selectmen Al Goldberg, “I’ve had the opportunity to work with Peggy for over 12 years in her various volunteer roles in town government. Her strong character, executive background, respect for our town’s history and institutions, and collaborative leadership style, give her a unique ability to tackle our challenges head on with a fresh perspective. As a former First Selectman of Madison, I know that Peggy has the right complement of skills to lead our town during this important time. I think she will make an excellent First Selectman and has my full support.”

Selectman Scott Murphy commented, “With Peggy, voters get the complete package to be the town’s chief executive: education, skills and experience. She is also a great listener. She values an open dialogue, respecting the opinions of others, and building to consensus before driving a course of action. As the Selectmen begin to tackle the upcoming challenges facing Madison, Peggy will listen to the concerns and ideas of all our citizens, not just a small few. Public input should be the basis of any plans the Board of Selectmen brings to the town for consideration. I strongly support Peggy’s candidacy.”
