Public Hearing on Fracking Waste Ordinance @ Madison Town Campus - Room A
Mar 26 @ 6:30 pm

The Madison Board of Selectman will hold a public hearing on an ordinance prohibiting waste associated with natural gas and oil extraction through a process known as “fracking” in the town of Madison. The hearing is scheduled for Monday, March 26 at 6:30 p.m. in Town Campus Room A. Link here to read a draft of the proposed ordinance.

The Madison Democratic Town Committee passed the following resolution regarding the ban of fracking waste at its regular meeting on March 12: “It is resolved that the Madison Democratic Town Committee supports the adoption of a town ordinance prohibiting the storage, handling, treatment, disposal and use of all waste derived from natural gas and oil extraction processes in order to protect public health and safety and the quality of natural resources and property within the Town of Madison, and we urge the Madison Board of Selectmen to pass an ordinance that is substantively the same as the ordinance passed by at least 35 other Connecticut towns thus far.”

There is some concern on the part of supporters of the fracking waste ban that a change made to the original ordinance “Prohibitions” would allow materials containing fracking wastes in our town if they received “Beneficial Use Determination or other approval for use by the Department of Energy & Environmental Protection (CT DEEP).” We encourage people to come out to support the ordinance while making it clear that language allowing any fracking waste should be eliminated from the final ordinance.

Please contact Susan Glantz for more information.
